Etzel Cardeña

About Etzel Cardeña

I have held the endowed Thorsen Professorship in Psychology at Lund University, Sweden, since 2005, and directed the Center for Research on Consciousness and Anomalous Psychology (CERCAP). My main interconnected areas of research include alterations of consciousness and anomalous experiences (including ostensible parapsychology or psi phenomena), dissociative and posttraumatic reactions, hypnosis and related phenomena, and the classification and neurophenomenology of alterations of consciousness.

I was born and raised in México City and did postgraduate work in Canada and the US, getting a Ph. D. from the University of California, Davis (Charles Tart, supervisor) , where I simultaneously did 2 years of graduate work in theater directing. I held a postdoctoral position at Stanford University (David Spiegel, supervisor). Some of my more than 400 publications are in top journals in psychology and related disciplines including American Journal of Psychiatry, American Psychologist, Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, Cortex, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Experimental Psychology, and Psychological Bulletin. My research, theoretical, pedagogical, and historical contributions have garnered 25 awards from various professional organizations.

I am currently the Editor-in-Chief of the American Psychological Association's journal Psychology of Consciousness (https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/cns) as well as the founding editor of the Journal of Anomalous Experience and Cognition (https://journals.lub.lu.se/jaex/), and, was during its first nine years, the founding editor of the Parapsychological Association's bulletin Mindfield.

My work has been covered by international media including the New York Times, the New Yorker, and the BBC, and I have recorded many presentations and interviews in the internet. I have also worked as a theater visiting artist, director, actor, and playwright in México, the US, and Sweden (see the page on Artistic Activities).
